Free Space Optical Connector for High Power MWIR Applications

Q-Peak, Inc. has been awarded a contract from the Naval Air Warfare Center to leverage its extensive free space optical connector design experience to develop a novel high power optical connector for common Mid-Wave Infrared fibers that is mechanically robust.

Q-Peak will demonstrate an integrated fiber collimator/mode stripper formed using a collapsed index-matched capillary tube. Working with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Q-Peak will then demonstrate epoxy-free mounting of the fiber collimator assembly within a Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE)-matched ferrule using a proprietary glass solder. In the next phase, Q-Peak will also work with NRL to concurrently develop a process for applying nanostructured (“Motheye”) anti-reflection (AR) coatings to the fiber collimator assembly. Finally, Q-Peak will conduct mechanical design and modeling/simulation to design a connector housing and mating interface robust against MIL-STD-810G environmental testing criteria through many mate-demate cycles.

Q-Peak envisions application of the high-power optical fiber connector directly into advanced Infrared Countermeasures (IRCM) system architectores. In addition, the low loss, high power fiber connector technology will allow Q-Peak to further broaden its industry leading portfolio of 2 to 5 micron mid-IR laser products.
